The Lighthouse

One stormy, dark, winters evening many years ago there was a party for the noisy villagers. In the lighthouse sat an old, miserable man called Alexander Keefe. He sat at an old, rusty table with a candle alight, writing letters to his long, lost brother. He shut the window so he could not hear the happy people laughing and cheering. Suddenly the massive, bright lighthouse bulb blew out and a silence fell over the whole village. The window flew open and the candle on Alexander’s table quenched. Scared, frightened, terrified he ran up the slippy, spiral staircase to see if there was a spare bulb lens. He lifted the bulb from the stand and stupidly stumbled over his toolbox and the lens smashed to bits. He heard a ship horn and saw that it was gradually coming closer and closer. He sprinted down the stairs and to his disbelief he saw all the villagers with lanterns coming towards the lighthouse. Everyone cheered as the ship passed safely.
All the villagers were delighted. Alexander thought they were not so bad after all. It was a risky and scary night. By Emer Murray

Recount Writing- Billy Perryman

January 20th 1907
Dear Diary
My name is Billy Perryman and I am fourteen years old today. I live on Bryher in the Scilly Isles. I have a twin sister and her name is Laura Perryman.
Today started of like any other boring old day. Laura and I were milking the cows ,when Laura spotted a three masted schooner that had red masts  and a shiny coat of thick black paint. We dropped the buckets and I ran to tell father and chief. Laura ran to the top of Watch Hill to keep an eye on the schooner.
Everyone gathered around the beach to watch the race against Bryher and St Marys. The crew and I pushed the dark grey gig into the bright blue sea very nervously. Then we all hopped into the gig and the race began.  My hands were aching with pain from pushing the oars back and forwards. It looked as if St Marys were winning  but a huge wind was coming behind us and gave us a big help.St Marys lost an oar so they had to turn back. I was so pleased we won the race. Everyone was cheering for us. Chief climbed up onto the schooner and shook the captains hand. This meant there was money for everyone. We had to guide the schooner to St Marys harbour. The ship was American and it was called the General Lee. Then the party began. Everyone was pleased with Laura, even me. The cake was delicious and did not last very long. Everyone was chatting and all the children were playing outside. Laura asked could she row on the gig again. They all laughed and said what they always say ''girls don't row on the gig''. Laura ran to the hen house and cried. I felt so sorry for her. When everybody had gone home, father and I had another fight. This one was because the milk buckets were not clean enough. Father stood up and banged the table with his fist and started shouting like mad. I ran ran up to Laura and told her that father and I had another row. I said I am going to America. I know one day I will.....

Halloween Poem

On Halloween night I got a big fright,
I saw a black bat in flight,
There was a witch in the sky,
Flying her broom by the light of the moon,
Pumpkins on windows and fireworks all round,
Oh how I love the sound of Halloween!

Recount Writing- Bear Grylls

Dear Diary, Bear Grylls here. I'm just back from my latest trip to a rainforest in the Amazon. My mission was to catch a rare snake. It was one of the best trips ever.
My landing was very rough. The helicopter was one of the oldest in the world and it could just about fly. Parachuting down was the scariest bit because we were thousands of feet in the air. Going down I grabbed onto a tree and got stuck. Anyway when I got down I was on a search for food and drink. I found a close by river, so I caught a fish and had gallons of water. I was just about to leave the river when I saw the most brightly coloured school of fish. Luckily I had my underwater camera with me and I took tons of  photos of them. At this point I was looking for something  to make shelter with. Soon I found a few big leaves, sticks and rocks to make a small hut. In the morning when I got out of my hut I was surrounded by the most unusual snakes. I took one and examined    it very closely, it had the most exotic colours on it. Soon I set it free again. My mission was complete. I found a dead boar and ate it for my dinner. The next day I was going home.
The trip home was a bit bumpy at the start, but it was worth the journey to see my wife and children to show them all the photos I had taken. It was the best trip ever.
